According to Sear, the trefoil ornament on the crown of the emperor distinguishes this coin from the issue of the previous emperor, Tiberius II Constantine. Under Maurice Tiberius, this issue continued to be struck in the name of Tiberius II albeit with badly blundered inscriptions until year 8, from they greatly improved, such as is seen on this example.
