(x) Balbinus (238), AR Denarius, 3.18g, 1h, Rome, struck 22 April - 29 July, IMP C D CAEL BALBINUS AVG, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. IOVI CONSERVATORI, IOVI CONSERVATORI, Jupiter standing left, wearing only a mantle across shoulders, holding thunderbolt and sceptre (BMC 22; RIC 2; RSC 8), the ultimate artistic definitive of Balbinus for which any discerning portrait collector could aspire, typical striking splits to peripheries, otherwise of sound fabric and exceptional engraver style, much as struck with only a trace of softness in reverse dies, otherwise an AWESOME coin.
