Byzantine lead seal of John Syropoulos
(12th/13th cent.)
Obverse: Saint martyr Theodore standing, facing, nimbate, wearing military dress and chiton, holding spear in right hand, and a resting by his left on a shield, sigla ΟΑΓΙΟC-Θ[Ε]Ο[ΔΩΡΟC], no visible border.

Reverse: Inscription in 4 lines betwenn decorative patterns, ΙΩΦΡΑ/[Γ]ΙCΜΑΤΟΥ/CΥΡΟΠΟΥ/ΛΟΥ = Ἰωάννου σφράγισμα τοῦ Συροπούλου (Seal of John Syropoulos), dotted border.

We don't know whether the owner of the present seal could be identified with John Syropoulos, a late 12th century grammatikos, author of an oration for Epiphany addressed to Isaac II, something very probable. Cf. Kazhdan, Alexander, ed. (1991), Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium, Oxford University Press, p. 2001.

Condition: Very Fine

Diameter: 33 mm
