Byzantine lead seal of Agapetos protokourator
(ca 11th cent.)



Obverse: Bust of the Mother of God, facial, nimbate, wearing chiton and maphorion, holding on her chest Jesus Christ as child, sigla, ΜΡ-ΘΥ (Mother of God), dotted border.

Reverse: Inscription in 4 lines between decorative patterns and following a cross, + ΑΓΑ/ΠΗΤΟC/Α´ΚΟΥΡΑ/ΤΩΡ = Ἀγαπητὸς πρωτοκουράτωρ (Agapetos protokourator), dotted border.

The roman office of kourator from 6th cent. acquired the meaning of the manager of imperial estates (kouratoreia). Agapetos was the head of the other kouratores in Constantinople. Cf. Kazhdan, Alexander, ed. (1991), Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium, Oxford University Press, pp. 1155-1156.
