Byzantine lead seal of Kakikios protoproedros,
in charge of imperial koiton and first doux
(ca 11th cent.)
Obverse: Inscription in 5 lines, +ΚΕR,Θ,/ΤΩCΩΔΟΥ/ΚΑΚΙΚΙΟΠΡΩΤ,ΠΡ,/ΕΔΡ, (Lord, help your servant Kakikios protoproedros), dotted border.
Reverse: Inscription in 5 lines, ΕΠΙΤΟΥ/ΚΟΙΤΩΝ(Ο)C/SΑ,ΔΟΥΚ,ΚΑΡ,/.....ΤΩ/ΑΝΙ.. (in charge of the imperial koiton and first dux... [the rest uncertain]), dotted border.
It is to note that koiton (in Greek, κοιτών, Lat. cubiculum), in the seals refers to the imperial chamber, thus the person in charge of it possesed the designation of the imperial chamberlain (cf. Kazhdan, Alexander, ed. (1991), Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium, Oxford University Press, p. 1137).
