The Collection of British Tokens formed by John Rose

18th Century Tokens, Unlocalised issues, Thomas Spence, Halfpenny, 7.62g/12h (DH Middlesex 676), 'Farthing' from the same dies, 4.64g/9h (DH 1076) [2]. First about very fine, second worn but an exceptional rarity £50-£100

---

Provenance: DH 676 bt R. Lubbock 1975; DH 1076 bt W. Kennett 1985.

On DH 1076, the owner comments "never seen another"; the cataloguer would add that the only other specimens he has noted in commerce were those in the Hamer sale, 1930, as part of Lot 239, and the DH plate coin, sold as Lot 868 in the first Baldwin 'Basement' sale, 30 September 2014, when it was described as 'possibly unique'; it is likely that the 'Basement' and Hamer specimens are one and the same
