Cheshire 3 (R). Macclesfield. Copper penny. 26.7 gm. 36 mm. "A fine example of die-sinking by Westwood" (Waters). 1790. Bust right; CHARLES ROE ESTABLISHED THE COPPER WORKS 1758 around / Industry seated left in the mode of Britannia, but holding a toothed cog and a screw-type drill; THE MACCLESFIELD PENNY around, 1790 below. Prooflike Uncirculated; slight marks; some reverse weakness as typical with this piece with a high relief design that exceeded the capacity of the flan to fill the die (note the reverse weakness in the D&H plate coin).
