William II. 1087-1100. AR profile type penny. 1.61 gm. 19 mm. Winchester mint, Lifwold (Leofwold) moneyer. 1086-1089 (?). His crowned bust right, holding a sword; PILLEM REX / A cross patee with a pellet at the center, over a cross fleury; LIFPOLD ON PINC. S. 1258. N. 851. Good Very Fine; particularly well struck portrait. Overall well centered, an attractive coin with the design well set off by the toning. With an old tag in a fine hand.

Ex DNW Auction 63 (October 2004) lot 212 (£1300, $2316 plus commission).

Scarce to rare issue for this moneyer and mint: this Winchester moneyer is not noted in the first 40 volumes of the SCBI for coins other than those of William I. This must have been struck near the end of this moneyer's career.
