LOW COUNTRIES, Nederlandse Opstand (Dutch Revolt). Holland. 1566/8-1581. AR (30mm, 6.62 g). Coat-of-arms depicting lion rampant left within beaded border in an oval countermark on a 1567 1/5 Philipsdaalder of the Spanish Netherlands. For countermark: Van Gelder, "De Klop van 1573/4," in De Geuzenpenning 3 (July 1954), H1; cf. P&W p. 22 (lion rampant); Azzopardi 665A (attributed to Malta; this coin illustrated). For host: Vanhoudt I 94. Host: Toned, areas of weak strike. Near VF. Countermark: Good VF. Extremely rare.

From the El Medina Collection.

Further research indicates that both the countermark of the lion coat-of-arms and the lion rampant, attributed by Restelli & Sammut to Malta, are in fact issues of the 1573/4 Dutch Revolt.
