MALTA, Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Jean-Paul Lascaris Castellar. Grandmaster, 1636-1657. Æ 4 Tarì (35mm, 10.20 g, 12h). Valletta mint. Dated 1643. Crowned coat-of-arms; sun to left, moon to right / Clasped hands within border of clouds. Countermarks: Double-headed eagle within circular countermark (Authorized 27 may 1646) and head of John the Baptist in oval countermark (Authorized 19 April 1662). Gatt 14-4T-121X111; Restelli & Sammut 58-9; Schembri 5; KM 68. For countermarks: Gatt p. xix; Restelli & Sammut p. 216-217; KM 98. VF. Clear countermarks.

The Order faced a significant problem with problem with counterfeit copper issues originating both on Malta itself and elsewhere, leading to a myriad of countermarks in the mid-17th to late 18th centuries.
