The apple Venus holds was the reward for the Judgement of Paris – the great "beauty contest" between Venus (Aphrodite), Juno (Hera), and Minerva (Athena). The judge Paris (also known as Alexander) was swayed not only by Venus' beauty, but by her promise to give him the hand of the most beautiful woman on earth, Helen of Troy. The outcome directly led to the Trojan War. (CNG Inventory 961685 note).
