Libius Severus (461-465). AE Nummus, Rome mint. Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. / Monogram of Ricimer within wreath. RIC X, 2715. AE. 0.78 g. 10.00 mm. RR. Very rare. Dark green patina. F.

Libius Severus was proclaimed emperor by Ricimer in Ravenna on 19 November 461. 'His nummi, probably of Rome, are anomalous in that they bear not Severus' monogram but one formed by the letters R,C,I, and M, which can only stand for RICIMER. The use of a monogram was in itself an innovation on Western coins, though they had been customary for nearly two decades in the East, and the employment of Ricimer's name, that of an imperial subject, was a reflection of the patrician's great position in the state. (P. Grierson, LRC, p. 254).
