Ostrogothic Italy. Theodahad (534-536). AE 40 Nummi-Follis, Rome mint. DN THEOD-HATVS REX. Helmeted and mantled bust right. / [VIC]TORIA PRINCIPV SC. Victory standing right on prow, holding wreath and palm frond. COI 89b; MIB 81; MEC 1 141. AE. 9.56 g. 25.00 mm. RR. Very rare and in good condition for issue. Dark green patina, minor roughness on reverse. VF/About VF.

Whereas Theoderic was scrupulous in maintaining a show of deference to Constantinople in his coinage, Theodahad brazenly introduced his own portrait to the coinage. As Grierson, p. 11, says 'these folles are the most impressive coins issued by any Germanic ruler of the fifth or sixth centuries.' (Triton XXIII, ?2020, lot 994 note).
