Merchant Scrips; Forges Radnor, St.Maurice, Qc 1857 Uncut Sheet of 4 notes includes Une Piastre ($1), Trente Sols (30 Sols), Douze Sols (12 Sols 6d) (2 notes). Exceptionally rare issue, first uncut sheet ever seen and/or handled by us. Sheet VF/EF for issue. Forges Radnor; The name Forges Radnor was the name given to the Ore mine in Three Rivers, Qc, and dates back to 1854. The name Radnor carries on the memory of Mr. Hall, the funder of the first ironworks in 1854. The name refers to the County of Radnorshire in Wales, the original home of the Hall financiers of Canada. The locality of the mine eventually became known as Saint-Maurice, which is reflected on the scrip itself. At the time of operation (by Larue & Co. 1853-1866) workers were paid with tickets printed on behalf of the Company. These tickets were not accepted as legal tender on the general market but were available to be used only at the Companies local stores. This financial arrangement, unfair and intertwined with conflict of interest kept the workers dependant of the employers and permitted the employer to profit twice by not only receiving services for salary paid out but also profit per sale in their local shops using the tickets. An intriguing part of Quebec history.
