Netherlandish (c. 1600), St Anthony of Padua, bronze-gilt rectangular plaquette, St Anthony standing, holding a cross and a baby sitting on a book and flanked by an open book on a table and a skull on a plinth, 103 x 72mm (Weber 1041.11 – illustrated as 1041.12; Scaglia XII.14), mount removed from top, very fine. The infant could either be the Christ Child (St Anthony was once seen at his private devotions with the Child in his arms) or the new-born baby whom Anthony miraculously taught to speak in defence of his mother's honour.
