THRACE. Maroneia. Circa 365-330s BC. Stater (Silver, 22.5 mm, 11.07 g, 12 h), struck under the magistrate Kallikrates. Bridled horse galloping to left; below, dog with a curly tail – something like a modern Pomeranian – walking to left. Rev. EΠI K-AΛΛ-IKPA-TEOΣ Grape vine with four bunches of grapes, all within linear square; around, inscription with an ivy leaf at the upper left; all within a shallow incuse square. Jameson 1061 (this coin). Schönert-Geiss 488.1 (V33/R58 this coin). Traité II, 4, 1476 (this coin cited). West 84c (this coin). Toned and clear. Minor uncleaned deposits and struck from slightly worn dies, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Aletheia Collection, from the Exceptional Private Collection, Leu Numismatics 76, 27 October 1999, 79, ex Hess-Leu 31, 6 December 1966, 200, Monnaies et Médailles XIX, 5 June 1959, 356, and from the collections of R. Jameson and G. Duruflé.

Because of the extraordinary symbol on the obverse this is probably the most endearing of all the coinages of Maroneia. This rather thick-bodied dog, with its tall neck, short legs and curly tail, seems to be sedately trotting along next to his galloping friend, his tiny legs whirling to keep up. No doubt if the horse begins going too fast the dog will bark crossly and get him to slow down.
