CELTIC, Northeast Gaul. Uncertain tribe, perhaps the Suessiones or the Ambiani. Circa 60-30/25 BC. Quarter Stater (Gold, 12.5 mm, 1.40 g, 6 h), "au petit serpent cornu et à la croisette" type. Celticized head to right, with a laurel wreath and, below right, a wing-like element. Rev. Horse galloping to right; above, crescent and horned serpent looking back to left (a carnyx?); to right, various ornaments; below, cross. Delestrée & Tache 329. Scheers group 26a, 182 (ascribed to the Suessiones). This type, with a cross symbol on the reverse rather than an "anchor", is very uncommon, if not rare. Very well and sharply struck, with a particularly attractive reverse. Extremely fine.

From the Aletheia Collection, ex Leu Numismatics 79, 31 October 2000, 2.
