KINGS OF LYDIA. Alyattes II, circa 610-560 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 10 mm, 2.39 g), Sardes. Valvel On the right, head of a lion with open jaws to left; on the left, the tip of an opposed head of a lion's nose. Rev. Double incuse square. Weidauer 93 var (Trite). Very rare. Very fine.



The obverse die used to strike this coin was originally made to strike staters and bore two confronted lions' heads, one on the left, barely visible on this lower denomination piece here, and one on the right.
