Theodore I Comnenus-Lascaris, emperor of Nicaea, 1208-1222. Weight for an Electrum Trachy (Bronze, 13x4 mm, 4.14 g), probably Magnesia. Ο/Α/Γ/Ι/Ο-C //Θ/Ε-/Δ-ω/ΡΟ/C Half-length figure of St. Theodore facing, nimbate, armored and holding a spear in his right hand and a shield in his left. Rev. ΘΕΟΔ-ω-ΡΟC Crowned half-length figure of Theodore facing, holding labarum in his right hand and globus cruciger in his left; around the edge in incised letters: +Β-Α-C-Ι-Λ-Ι-Κ-Ο-Ν. Apparently unpublished, but for the general types, see Theodore I, DOC 11. Apparently unknown and of great interest. The incised inscription on the edge, basilikon indicates that it is an officially produced weight, and the types and style make it most likely to be an issue of Theodore I rather than of Theodore II (1254-1258), whose types seem quite different. It must have been intended to be used to check the weight of electrum trachys. Attractive and clear with a dark patina. Good very fine.
