BURGUNDIANS. Sigismond, 516-524. Solidus (Gold, 20 mm, 4.43 g, 6 h), struck in the name of Justin I, probably Lyon, but without any mintmark (the IS on the reverse has been interpreted as standing for the village of Isarnodorum, but it is more likely to stand for Sigismond), circa 518-524. DN IVSTI-NVS PP AVC Helmeted, diademed and cuirassed bust of Justin 3/4 facing, turned slightly to right, holding spear in his right hand and with a shield over his left shoulder. Rev. VICTOR-I-A AVCCC IS / CONOB Angel standing facing, holding long cross in his right hand and globus cruciger in his left; to right, star. Belfort 5154. Lafaurie, Gourdon, pl. VI, p. 64/5. Lafaurie, Lyon 27 (same dies). MEC 340 (same dies). Very rare. A splendid, toned and well-struck example. Virtually as struck.
Like all the other known examples, this coin must come from the Gourdon Hoard of 1845, which contained 104 coins (solidi and tremisses) as well as some magnificent gold objects (now in the Cabinet des Médailles in Paris. In the 6th century there was a monastery located at Gourdon and it seems likely that the hoard was buried in 524 when the area was attacked by the Franks.
