Menelik II gold Matte Proof Medal EE 1895 (1903) PR67 NGC, Paris mint, Gill-M39 (this medal). 32.5mm. 23.5g. By J.C. Chaplain and H. Patey. A commemorative gold medal that celebrates the Construction of the Djibouti-Addis Ababa Railroad, featuring the superbly-detailed bust of Menelik II and the image of a steam locomotive on the reverse with the translated legend, "Earth Train Commemoration" surrounding. The luscious, essentially-pristine surfaces are sheathed in a deep saffron satin and the piece contains a ring mount at the top. Notable as the plate coin in the Gill reference book, virtually unmatched in both visual allure and technical quality, and decidedly rare as such.
