Louis XV gold 2 Louis d'Or Mirliton 1723-A UNC Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Paris mint, KM471, Dup-1637, Gad-345 (R4), Jones-2930. From the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. The largest denomination purpose-struck by the French crown for use its in New World colonies, the so-called Double Louis d'Or 'Mirliton'--the name for a eunuch flute, supposedly referencing a popular song of the period that ridiculed Louis's minister Cardinal Dubois--were reportedly struck to pay the wages of French soldiers stationed in Canada. This particular example, recovered from the wreckage of the Le Chameau off the coast of Port Nova Island, Nova Scotia, represents part of the 82,010 livres sent to Nouvelle France in August 1725. While the surfaces have taken on a matte texture from the time spent underwater, the piece on the whole is entirely uncirculated and razor-sharp throughout, without the least trace of doubling or adjustments. Most recently, a raw uncirculated example realized 12,500 Euros in June. Sold with a copy of the shipwreck recovery certificate from Daniel Frank Sedwick.
