A rare gold medal honoring Duke Maximilian of Bavaria, struck in the same year as the German Unification, following the Franco-Prussian War. Rendered to exceptionally high relief, the fields reflective and contrasting sharply against the frosted portrait of Maximilian and the detailed wreath framing the reverse periphery.
