Brandenburg-Prussia. Joachim I Nestor (1499-1535) gold Goldgulden 1519 XF45 NGC, Frankfurt an der Oder mint, Fr-2127 (Rare), Schulten-290. IOΛC • P • ЄL' • mΛ IR • BRΛnDЄn (rosette stops), St. Paul standing threequarters facing with nimbus, sword in right hand, Gospels in left; all within ornate border / (crescent) mOnЄ • nO • ΛVR • FRΛnЄKЄOR • 1519 (rosette stops), four shields containing the arms of Brandenburg, Pomerania, Nürnberg, and Zollern, over floriate cross with the electoral shield at center. A truly fantastic rarity from the Electorate of Brandenburg, minted during the power struggle between the House of Hohenzollern and elector Friedrich the Wise over the Archdiocese-Electorate of Mainz. According to our research, this is only the second example of the type to emerge on the market since the Second World War, and second to come to auction in almost 20 years. Minted on a handsome and even flan of good metal, the strike exhibits hardly the least evidence of softness or doubling, allowing for full appreciation of the beauty of the design. For reference, the last example to come to auction (struck from different dies) brought the equivalent of $17,778 in November 2004.
