Dortmund. Free City Taler 1542 AU50 NGC, Dav-9172 var. (date), Schulten-774 (same). A rare issue hailing from the Hanseatic city of Dortmund, which at the time of this coin's production held great commercial prestige, one which would eventually decline after the Thirty Years' War. The type represented by the offering is extremely scarce, and our search of electronic auction records has yielded only a single auction result from 2005, though this is of the Davenport-listed date of 1541. This offering is dated 1542 and is unlisted in both Davenport and Schulten. It is the only specimen of its kind which we are aware of at the present date. Despite some light circulation the offering retains argent mint luster, which glistens across the fields upon rotation amidst only light rub to the higher points and otherwise clear detail. With all likelihood, given the lack of auction appearances for the type and the unlisted date variety, this lot represents a unique opportunity for our bidders.
