Great Britain
Edward I (1272-1307) Penny ND (January to May 1280) MS67★ NGC, London mint, Class 2b, S-1386, N-1015. 1.44gm. +ЄDWR AИGL DИS hyB, crowned bust of Edward facing with long neck and small face; crown with band shaped to ornaments / CIVI | TAS | LOИ | DOИ, long cross with group of 3 pellets in each quarter. Easily among the finest surviving examples of this usually prolific long-cross type by a mile, NGC's census alone recording the next highest grade they have seen for this subvariety as an XF45 (the next finest for the type being an MS65). Delightfully expressive to a level almost unheard for Edward's flatly struck penny coinage, and of such an early emission, no less; the striking methods of the time often leave ghosting of the reverse long cross over the obverse features. Additionally toned with an utterly charming iridescence, and hands down the ideal type coin.
