Great Britain
Edward VI (1547-1553) gold 1/2 Sovereign ND (1551-1553) AU58 PCGS, Tower mint, Tun mm, Third Period, S-2451, N-1865 (R), Schneider-695. (tun) ЄDVVΛRD' • VI: D' • G' • ΛGL': FRΛnCI' • Z • hIB': RЄX:, crowned, armored half-length figure of Edward right, sword in right hand, orb in left / (tun) IhS' • ΛVTЄm: TRΛNSIЄ' • PЄRmЄDI' • ILLO' • IBΛT •, crowned Tudor shield flanked E-R. A through-and-through outlier for Edward's coinage in general and his gold in particular--a well-struck emission with original luster and hardly the least bend to the flan, and on the cusp of Mint State, no less. Indeed the present specimen is tied with one other piece at NGC for the finest certified. And it is inescapable why: the legends are evenly and carefully cut, the portrait of the boy-king humanistic, all captured on a full flan free of edge cracks. Perhaps a nearly perfect type representative for this short-lived issue, and difficult to imagine meaningfully finer.
