Great Britain
James I gold Rose Ryal ND (1605-1606) MS62 PCGS, Tower mint, Rose mm, Second coinage, KM42, S-2613, N-2079 (R), Schneider-6. • (rose) • IACOBVS • D' • G' • MAG' • BRIT • | FRAN' • ET • HIBER' • REX •, James seated facing on Gothic throne, within tressure, lis-tipped scepter in right hand, globus in left, portcullis at feet / • (rose) • A • DNO' • FACTVM • EST • ISTVD • ET • EST • MIRAB' • IN • OCVLIS • NRIS, royal shield over Tudor rose. An immensely appealing and thoroughly gratifying type which stands at two poles in the history of England's gold coinage. On the one hand, the piece stands as the first Rose Ryal issue produced during James's reign, marking it as far scarcer than the majority of type representatives that become available, even before taking into consideration its stellar near choice grade. On the other, this denomination marks the final British coin produced following the Sovereign canon of Henry VII, with the monarch enthroned between pillars, and the reverse shield within a Tudor rose (hence 'Rose' Ryal), and thus represents one of the last Stuart issues to reflect back on a more medieval, Gothic style. From an aesthetic perspective, the piece is quite simply magnificent, hardly a trace of bending discernable in the flan while the few patches of flatness that do exist staying well-clear of the king's regal portrayal. Rarely found so fine, and one of a mere 6 Mint State Rose Ryals of all issues certified between NGC and PCGS combined.
