Charles I gold Triple Unite 1644 AU Details (Altered Surfaces) PCGS, Oxford mint, Plume mm, KM338, S-2729, N-2385 (ER), Schneider-304 (same dies), Brooker-842 (possibly same dies, later state). 26.64gm. Small module type with OXON. Undoubtedly one of the quintessential and most instantly recognizable of early modern English gold coins, the Triple Unites struck during the early stages of the English Civil War of 1642-1649 represent both England's largest gold denomination and a measured propaganda campaign on the part of the king to assure his people that he upheld "the Protestant religion, the laws of England and the Liberty of Parliament". Reportedly among the rarest subset of this series according to North, the present specimen represents one of the finest of the many die styles brought into being by Nicholas Briot's experiments into milled coinage in the 1630s and 40s, granting Charles I a remarkably lifelike and humanistic pose, carrying the sword in one hand and the olive branch in the other. Despite the noted surface alteration on the holder, the coin seems quite handsomely produced and evenly struck--especially if the cited piece from Brooker does indeed represent a later die state. Certainly a more attainable example of this emblematic type, and one sure to improve upon its future owner's cabinet.
