George II gold Guinea 1728 MS65 NGC, KM563, S-3671. An impressive rarity in its own right, the 1728 Guinea of George II only very rarely appears on auction, with its more common and lower denomination counterpart, the 1/2 Guinea of the same year, appearing relatively more frequently. It must be said, then, that the debut of this date and type in our sales, particularly in this exceptional grade, is truly extraordinary. Indeed, the certified population speaks for itself. Of only two examples certified by NGC the present offering is the finest, and by three full points. Meanwhile, PCGS has not yet certified a single representative. In hand, the quality of the specimen is self-evident and needs no grade to communicate "gem" in every conceivable sense of the word. George's portrait is fully struck, as is the reverse shield, the strike perfectly centered, with a halo of brilliant golden luminosity embracing the devices and embellishing the whole of the surfaces. Such exquisite quality is rare for any coin of this age, but it is especially so with an already very fleeting issue, and we are both proud and excited to present our bidders with this unique opportunity.
