George III gold Proof Pattern 1/4 Guinea 1764 PR65 PCGS, KM-Pn45, W&R-141 (R5). Plain edge. By Richard Yeo. An incredibly well-provenanced specimen of this most elusive fractional pattern, which, while conceived within the first 5 years of George III's accession to the throne, resulted in only a single circulation issue, struck in 1762. Admittedly struck from slightly rusted dies, the finish on the offering is quite simply fantastic, not a shred of detail restricted by the small format of the coin and the dies clearly polished to the gills. In addition to the present specimen, only two others (one being the Wilson and Rasmussen plate coin) have come to auction in the past decade, with a decent number of the remaining specimens residing in the holdings of museums. A perfect accompaniment to the additional Proofs of George III in this sale.
