Great Britain
George III gold Proof 1/2 Sovereign 1817 PR64+ Cameo PCGS KM673, S-3786, W&R-204 (R4), Marsh-400. Truly superlative, this borderline gem Proof of Record was produced during the height of the Great Recoinage begun in 1816, when pride was restored in British coin engraving and the currency was re-stabilized after the Napoleonic Wars, following the then-current lackluster designs. Inaugurating the new 1/2 Sovereign and Sovereign issue, this offering of Pistrucci's work fields even dual mirrors, toned to the lightest hint of sun orange and nicely complementing the relief of the devices. Bested by only one single example each at NGC and PCGS, we note that the next finest we have offered, a PR63 Ultra Cameo, achieved $14,400 when it crossed the auction block in our January 2019 NYINC auction.
