Great Britain
George IV gold Sovereign 1823 MS63 PCGS, KM682, S-3800, Marsh-7. Mintage: 617,000. Easily the lowest mintage date of the type and consequently, the rarest and most desirable of this early laureate head issue of George IV. While examples in any form qualify as scarce, Mint State specimens, such as the present coin, are truly rare. Of those that we have seen, the present example is certainly in competition for the most lovely. Set in bright orange-gold, the fields retain full mint bloom, with the strike sharply detailing all of George's hair as well as the surrounding legends. Very few surface marks are noted for the grade, and while the Jacob Terner example (sold by the Goldbergs in 2003) retains the same grade from PCGS, this attribute must put distance between the two; the eye-appeal truly approaches gem on this piece! We can only expect fierce competition from sovereign collectors for the right to own this exceptional conditional rarity.
