George IV gold Proof Pattern Sovereign 1825 PR63 Cameo PCGS, KM696, S-3801, W&R-235 (R5). Plain edge. By William Wyon after Chantrey, reverse by Jean-Baptiste Merlen. A simply fantastic Proof of Record that captures perfectly on all of the traits that make the Proofs of this series so popular--generously reflective surfaces that couple with sculpturesque engraving to provide the perfect canvass for the portraiture of Wyon and the delicate reverse heraldry of Merlen. Of immense rarity by all measures, this is only the second such piece we have ever offered, and appears to be one of just 6 to appear at auction in recent decades, with Wilson and Rasmussen's rarity rating suggesting only 6-10 known. Presently ranking amongst the highest numerically graded specimens at PCGS, we can only anticipate the warm welcome it will receive as it crosses the auction block.
