Victoria gold Proof Pattern Sovereign 1893 PR65 Cameo PCGS, KM-Unl., S-Unl., W&R-339 (R6; this coin). Plain edge. By Allan Wyon. One the fantastic rarities within the Victorian pattern sovereign series, with the Hamilton-Smith lot listing noting that only 3 specimens were known as of 1927, a figure supported by Wilson and Rasmussen's R6 rating (3-5 known). One of a number of competing engravers commissioned to redesign Victoria's unpopular Jubilee portrait coinage--along with Edward Onslow Ford, Edward J. Poynterm, Henry N. Armstead, Charles A. Birch, and Thomas Brock--Wyon was much more of a medalist and seal designer than an artist in the numismatic medium. While his designs ultimately lost out to Thomas Brock's acclaimed "widow" head portraiture, they express no less inspired of a style, seemingly looking forward to a new style destined to surpass the Victorian artistry of the time. Appearing to be the only example to become available in recent decades, the offering exhibits a delightful precision of detail, its gem Proof flash doing little to conceal fields lined with fine die polish. Notably missing from the famed Douglas-Morris collection, and likely the only opportunity most will have to fill an otherwise perpetually unfillable hole in their collections.
