Great Britain
Elizabeth II gold VIP Proof Pattern Sovereign 1976 PR65 PCGS, KM-Unl., S-SC1 (Extremely Rare). Reeded edge. Brilliant finish. Mintage: 2. By Arnold Machin. An excessively rare discovery piece that first came to light around 2004-2005, and has been confirmed by the British Royal Mint to be one of a paltry two pieces struck without device frosting as VIP Proofs in 1976. The sole example available to collectors, with the other specimen currently residing in the Royal Mint's collection, it would be fair to say that this is likely the second rarest of Elizabeth II's sovereigns, following the virtually unattainable 1953, and is certainly the most elusive to carry her "decimal portrait" bust. One of the great modern rarities of the British series, and quite possibly the only opportunity most collectors will have to obtain a representative.
Ex. Bentley Collection (Baldwin's Auction 73, May 2012, Lot 380); Mark Rasmussen (via Spink, May 2005)
