Philip V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1712 L-M MS63 NGC, Lima mint, KM38.2, Cal-23. 26.97gm. From the 1715 Plate Fleet. A phenomenal example of a quintessential "treasure" type, salvaged from the famous Plate Fleet, which sank in a storm off the coast of Florida in 1715. The appearance is undeniably that of a sea-salvaged piece, with a pleasing satiny expression of luster resulting across the surfaces, the reverse fields just lightly granular in appearance and toned to a lovely tangerine hue. It appears that the assigned grade, impressively choice, is only limited by saltwater exposure, which seems rather more to be a defining feature of the offering than a limiting factor, and we find almost no discernible evidence of handling over the otherwise pristine fields and devices.
