Republic gold "Statue of General San Martin" Medal 1890 MS61 Prooflike NGC, 45mm. 74.39gm. By J.F.R. Whalen. Celebrating the cornerstone laying ceremony for the statue of South American liberator General San Martin in Lima on July 28, 1890. Uniformed bust of San Martin with J.R. initials on truncation / 13-line inscription listing the dignitaries who attended the ceremony, beginning with President Don Andrés A. Cáceres. An incredibly rare commemorative in gold, with a survey of auction records over the last decade revealing just one other example having changed hands several times, which shares the same dies with the present specimen. Known as the "Protector of Peru", Jose de San Martin was an Argentine general who led the southern and central regions of South America in their war for independence from Spain, and helped to liberate Argentina, Chile, and Peru.
