Joseph I gold "Monument" Medal 1775 MS62 NGC, cf. Wurzbach-4150 (silver), cf. Wellenheim-32 (same). 46mm. 53.70gm. By J. Gaspar. A fascinating commemorative medal produced on the erection of the Joseph I monument in Lisbon following the reconstruction of the city after the Great Lisbon Earthquake in 1755. The obverse displays the equestrian monument in fine detail, with the reverse depicting an allegorical scene of the personified city goddess guiding Lisbon to renewed growth and prosperity. Very rare, and the first of its type that we have seen or offered.
