South Africa
George V Proof 1/4 Penny 1933 PR64 Brown NGC, KM12.3, Hern-S13. Mintage: 20. One of the most hallowed rarities of the Union of South Africa, the 1933 Proof farthing very much stands in a league all its own. Belonging to the lowest mintage Proof set produced during George V's reign, of which Hern knew of only 5 complete examples, this farthing likely represents the single most difficult denomination of the entire set; unlike surrounding years that frequently saw reasonably large numbers of business strikes produced and correspondingly low numbers of Proofs, the Mint reports only 31-76 business strikes of the 1933 against a Proof mintage of perhaps as few as 20. To-date, only 6 such Proofs have been certified at NGC, with none at PCGS, of which the present piece is tied for the second finest graded. What is more, recent auction records report not a single example becoming available in well over a decade--the last example we handled coming as part of the complete 1933 Proof set in 2007. Certainly one of the few opportunities collectors of the series will have to acquire such a coin.
