Don Luis de Velasco & Vincenzo Gonzales bronze "Capture of Morro Castle" Medal ND (1763) MS62 PCGS, Betts-443, Medina-12, Eimer-704. 49.5mm. 55.48gm. By Thomas Prieto. Issued by the Royal Academy of Arts. Struck to commemorate the 1762 battle during which the Morro Castle, a Spanish fort in Havana, Cuba, was captured by a British fleet consisting of 200 vessels and approximately 14,000 men. The reverse scene, depicting the scene on July 30th, 1762 is especially expressive, as the engraving of the explosion inside the fort's walls actually shows soldiers being thrust into the air. Toned to a cocoa brown and well preserved for the type.
