Menelik II Specimen Birr EE 1887 (1895)-A SP63 PCGS, Paris mint, KM5, Gill-Y-9. Mintage: 20,000. An utterly charming example of this first year for the issue, struck to about a 20th of the mintage figure of the EE 1889. Fully mirrored over both sides, the faces of the coin are strikingly icy and awash with die polish, just a thin ring of iridescence developing in the margins. Though Gill notes the existence of Specimen or Prooflike strikes for this date, this is presently the single piece so graded by PCGS.
