Zauditu gold Pattern Werk (1/8 Birr) EE 1917 (1925) MS61 NGC, Addis Ababa mint, KM-X3.1, Gill-Y-21 var. (listed with lighter weight). 5.47gm. Variety with denomination obliterated. Struck with the reverse die for the 1/32 Birr type of Menelik II, the denomination officially effaced at the Addis Ababa mint. A most intriguing gold pattern from this first female head of an internationally recognized African country, who in spite of her fairly long reign, struck almost no circulating coinage. Only the third example of the type we've offered, we note that the current piece's weight is almost a gram heavier than the specimen recorded by Gill.
