"Exposition Coloniale Agricole du Gabon" gold Specimen Prize Medal 1888 SP64 PCGS, Lec-pg. 288 (this piece). 28mm. 11.98gm. Plain edge. By A. Bertrano. Awarded to Daumas, Béraud et Compagnie, one of the largest trading houses on the Congolese market. Of the highest rarity and an immensely important piece of French colonial history--according to Lecompte, this is the only known gold award medal of black Africa. Struck to the highest relief, the obverse surfaces seem nearly immaculate, just some small scratches around the reverse inscription, likely acquired during the act of inscribing itself, likely all that keeps it from a gem designation.
