Benevento. Gottschalk (Godescalco) gold Solidus ND (739-742) AU58 NGC, Fr-89, CNI-XVIIIa.2, MEC I-1091. 3.83gm. Perhaps imitating the Byzantine Emperor Justinian II. DNI | NVS PP, Byzantine-style bust facing, wearing chlamys pinned at right shoulder, globus cruciger in right hand / VICTOR | VϚVSTO, cross potent on four steps, D-Ϛ to either side, CONOB below. Very rare and strikingly crisp, hardly the least evidence of flatness present on even the highest points of the design. Patinated to a rainbow of old envelope tones, with faint die polish still visible in the fields, marking the present offering as far finer than the ex. Dr. Lawrence Adams, Garrett specimen.
