Leiden. City silver Siege 14 Stuivers 1574 MS63 NGC, Delm-170 (R3), Vanhoudt-475 (R2). 10.76gm. A scarce type struck during the Siege of Leiden by Spanish forces during the Eighty Years' War. The Latin legends to the obverse PVGNO PRO PATRIA ("I fight for the homeland") appropriately capture the spirit of rebellion against Spain. Toned in amber with a charming semi-iridescent blue dressed over the reverse.
