Russia
Kiev silver "Hexagonal" Grivna ND (c. 11th-13th Century) XF, Opitz-pg. 153 (this piece illustrated), Petrov-Plate 8, 350, Spassky-pg. 64, Fig. 43. 87x36mm. 194.48gm. A very rare and early grivna type, cast in pre-Mongol Russia (Kiev, Novgorod, and Chernigov), and which typically circulated in the south for tax payments, though they are also known in the north. Due to Kiev's destruction at the hands of the Mongol Horde in 1240, generally few of this type have survived down to the present day. Some minor residue from an old inventory sticker appears on the face, though this is largely non-distracting.
