Charles-Joanna, "Early Series"
Mexico City, Mexico, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer F to right, mintmark M to left (oMo-oFo), panel leaning left, very rare, ex-Jones (Plate Coin).Nesmith-16; Cal 73; S-M3; KM-17.11.47 grams. One of two known examples of Nesmith's variety #16, this coin is also one of very few assayer F (not F/P) to come to market. In fact, Ponterio noted in his November 2002 auction that this coin was the first assayer-F 4 reales ever offered at auction. Since then, there have only been four more, three of which we have auctioned. This example has AU details, light surface corrosion and minor edge-loss (probably from the "Golden Fleece wreck" of ca. 1550). It is a must-have for any advanced collection.Pedigreed to the Dr. Peter Jones collection, plated on page 69 of his book The First Coins of the Americas (2020), and to the Ponterio auction of November 2002, with original lot-tag #1008.
Estimate: 1250-2000 USD
