KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great'. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 4.28 g, 8h). Abydos mint. Struck under Kalas or Demarchos, circa 325-323 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, Hermes standing left, head right, holding kerykeion; Ξ below throne. Price 1502; ADM II Series I, 20 = BM acc. no. 2002,0101.308 (same obv. die); ANS inv. 1944.100.85012 (same dies). Attractive light toning, a couple die breaks on obverse, spot of die rust and porosity on reverse. Near EF. High relief portrait of Herakles.

This drachm is from the first issue of Alexander type coinage at the mint of Abydos, which was composed of staters, tetradrachms, and drachms. The engraver of the dies of this drachm also engraved tetradrachm dies (cf. ADM II 7 = ANS inv. 1944.100.85003).
