The Panthéon was designed by Jacques-Germain Soufflot for Louis XV, who intended it to serve as a church dedicated to Saint Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris. By the time construction was completed in 1790, Louis had been deposed, and the secular French Republic turned structure into a mausoleum for notable French citizens. The building was consecrated as a church in 1822 – as commemorated by this medal – but reverted back to a mausoleum again in 1830. The process would repeat itself once more, with President Louis Napoléon again transforming it into a church, before it was ultimately returned to a mausoleum in 1881.
